INCA TRAIL — THE GATEWAY TO MACHU PICCHU
The classic Inca Trail is a once-in-a-lifetime journey — a historic route that finishes with that unforgettable moment: stepping through the Sun Gate to see Machu Picchu rising from the clouds.
Before hitting the trail, you’ll explore the cultural heart of the Andes:
- Time to acclimatise in the ancient city of Cusco
- A visit to the Sacred Valley
- The incredible ruins of Ollantaytambo
Then the adventure truly begins:
- 4 days of trekking through high mountain passes and lush cloud forest
- 26 miles of original Inca pathways
- Authentic camping under the stars
- Epic South American scenery at every turn
The journey finishes with a guided tour of Machu Picchu — one of the world’s most iconic archaeological sites.
And that’s not all…
You’ll also experience a spectacular acclimatisation hike to Rainbow Mountain & the Red Valley — a breathtaking preview of what’s to come.
EXPEDITION ITINERARY DAY 1 - 4
Arrival in Cusco – Acclimatisation in the Andes
3 Days • Cusco 3,300m
Welcome to Peru! After landing in Cusco, you’ll be transferred to our accommodation — the perfect base to relax, enjoy local cuisine, and get to know your team while adjusting to the altitude.
We spend two full nights here to acclimatise before stepping onto the Inca Trail. This is free time and very relaxed.
Day 1 – Cusco → Ollantaytambo → Ayapata (3,300m)
Drive & Trek • 6–7 hours • Approx. 8.7 Miles
We head to Ollantaytambo for breakfast and to meet our in-country support crew. The trek begins as we pass the official checkpoint and follow original Inca pathways past Patallacta. A steady first day eases us into the adventure.
Day 2 – Ayapata (3,300m) → Dead Woman’s Pass (4,215m) → Chaquicocha (3,600m)
7–8 hours • Approx. 9.95 Miles
A big day — and the toughest section of the route. We take on the ascent to Dead Woman’s Pass, the highest point of the trek, with huge views over the Pacaymayu Valley. We continue past Runcu Raccay and the Inca site of Sayacmarca before reaching our Chaquicocha campsite for dinner under a truly star-filled sky.
Day 3 – Chaquicocha (3,600m) → Wiñay Wayna Camp
6–7 hours • Approx. 7.5 miles
Today the trail eases off after the big climbs. We follow a stunning section of original Inca pathway through high cloud forest, passing several archaeological sites along the way. By afternoon we reach Wiñay Wayna, our final campsite and the closest camp to Machu Picchu. An early dinner and briefing set us up for a very early start tomorrow.
