LEMOSHO ROUTE

KILIMANJARO'S MOST SCENIC TRAIL

The Lemosho Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most beautiful and remote trails — taking you from lush rainforest to lunar landscapes, across the vast Shira Plateau and up to the rooftop of Africa: Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

It’s quieter, dramatic, and designed for excellent acclimatisation — giving you a strong chance of summit success.

What You’ll Experience

• Rainforest and wild moorlands
• Crossing the iconic Shira Plateau
• The ascent to Lava Tower
• The stunning Barranco Valley
• Climbing the Barranco Wall (and the famous Kissing Rock)
• Moon-like terrain to Karanga & Barafu
• A midnight summit push under the stars
• Sunrise on Uhuru Peak — Africa waking beneath you

Why This Route Works

The longer itinerary allows better acclimatisation, making Lemosho one of the highest success-rate routes on Kilimanjaro.

After the Summit

Your adventure isn’t over when you leave the mountain. We celebrate your success in true Chasing Summits Adventures style:

• Materuni Village — coffee tour, waterfalls & a refreshing dip

• Optional Extras:

EXPEDITION ITINERARY: DAY 1 - 3

Arrival in Tanzania – Moshi/Arusha

Welcome to the home of Africa’s highest peak. You’ll be met on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to our lodge. Enjoy dinner, a hot shower, and a good night’s sleep before the adventure begins.

Day 1 – Londorossi Gate (2,389m) → Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,785m)

3–4 hours • Approx. 3 miles • Altitude gain: +396m

We leave the lodge for a 45–60 minute drive to Londorossi Gate. After meeting our full mountain crew (guides, porters, chefs and support team), we enjoy lunch while permits and checks are completed.

We begin our trek through lush rainforest, keeping an eye out for colobus monkeys, arriving at Mti Mkubwa Camp for our first night under the stars.

Day 2 – Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,785m) → Shira Plateau → Shira Hut Camp (3,895m)

4–6 hours • Approx. 4.3 miles • Altitude gain: +1,110m

After a solid night’s sleep and breakfast, we climb steadily out of the forest and onto the Shira Plateau — one of the highest plateaus in the world. The views open up dramatically, with our first full sight of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s iconic snowy summit.

We explore the plateau before reaching Shira Hut Camp 2, perfectly placed for an afternoon acclimatisation walk.

Day 3 – Shira Camp 2 (3,895m) → Lava Tower (4,650m) → Barranco Camp (3,986m)

4–6 hours • Approx. 6.3 miles • Net altitude gain: +91m (important acclimatisation day)

A crucial day for adjusting to altitude. We trek high to Lava Tower — known as “Shark’s Tooth” — where we stop for lunch at 4,650m. Then we descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley to sleep lower, helping the body adapt.

Tonight, we camp below the impressive Barranco Wall — tomorrow morning’s first challenge.

EXPEDITION ITINERARY: DAY 4 - 8

Day 4 – Barranco Camp (3,986m) → Karanga Camp (4,034m)

4–5 hours • Approx. 3 miles • Altitude gain: +48m

We kick off with the iconic Barranco Wall — an exhilarating scramble that looks tougher than it is. Your guides and porters make it look effortless, and the views from the top are next-level. After a well-earned tea break and some epic photos, we continue through the scenic Karanga Valley before arriving at Karanga Camp for the night.

Day 5 – Karanga Camp (4,034m) → Barafu Camp (4,662m)

4–5 hours • Approx. 2.5 miles • Altitude gain: +628m

A shorter but steeper climb today as we gain height and move into high-alpine terrain. On reaching Barafu Camp, you’ve completed the Southern Circuit — offering incredible views of the summit from multiple angles. Early dinner and early to bed… summit night awaits.

Day 6 – SUMMIT DAY

Barafu Camp (4,662m) → Stella Point (5,756m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp (3,106m)
Summit climb: 5–7 hours • Approx. 3 miles
Descent: 5–6 hours • Approx. 8 miles

The biggest day of the challenge. We wake just after midnight, fuel up, and begin the final ascent beneath a sky full of stars. A steady, determined push takes us to Stella Point — a huge milestone — before the final 45-minute effort to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

Congratulations — you’ve conquered Kilimanjaro!
Take in the sunrise above the clouds and enjoy time for photos before we begin our descent.

We return to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch, then continue down to Mweka Camp for a well-deserved sleep.

Day 7 – Mweka Camp (3,106m) → Mweka Gate → Moshi (1,633m)

3–4 hours • Approx. 6 miles • Altitude loss: –1,473m

A final descent through the rainforest leads us to Mweka Gate. Before leaving, we celebrate our incredible support crew with a heartfelt farewell ceremony. Then we return to Moshi for a hot shower, real bed and full bragging rights!

Day 8 – Materuni Coffee Experience & Waterfalls

A relaxing and fun day to round off the expedition. We visit Materuni village for a traditional coffee experience, followed by a short hike to one of Kilimanjaro’s beautiful waterfalls. The perfect wind-down after your summit success.
